This service might be interesting for a holder of flight instructor certificate - FI(A)flight school or private individual seeking for the freelance FIE(A) examiner for assessment of competence and training for extension of the FI(A) privileges.

 ⚠️ What is FI(A) extension ✈️

The flight instructor certificate includes privileges for all single-pilot trainings. However the privileges of flight instructor certificate will be extended based on the overall experience and flight instructor experience of the holder.  In order to provide the trainings towards instrument rating or on multi-engine aeroplanes, you dont need to be a holder of stand-alone license endorsement such as IRI(A) or CRI MEP(land). All the IRI(A) and CRI MEP(land) privileges are merged into the flight instructor endorsement - FI(A)

Extensions for most of the FI(A) privileges requiring additional training and checking. The checking serves as assessment of competence. For less complex trainings, the assessment of competence is done by senior flight instructor certified in accordance with FCL.905.FI(j).

Unrestricted privileges

After successfully passed assessment of competence, your Flight Instructor privileges are limited by FCL.910.FI to provide:

  • flight training for private pilot PPL and light aircraft pilot license LAPL;
  • integrated courses at PPL level;
  • flight training for class and type ratings for single-pilot, single-engine aircraft, except for single-pilot high-performance complex aeroplanes;
  • flight training for VFR Night rating, towing rating and aerobatic rating.

However, you will not be allowed to authorise student pilots to conduct first solo flights and first solo cross-country flights. The limitation may be shifted once completing at least 100 hours of flight training instruction in aeroplanes or TMGs and, in addition supervised at least 25 student solo flights. Once the limitation has been shifted and FCL.910.FI is removed from your license, in addition to your FI(A) privileges you will be legally allowed to authorise student pilots to conduct first solo flights and first solo cross-country flights.

PPL and LAPL training privileges

Privileges for training towards private pilot and light aircraft pilot license is given after passing the flight instructor assessment of competence. The privileges are granted in accordance with FCL.905.FI(a). In addition to license privileges, you will also be given the. authorization to provide single-engine class rating training in accordance with FCL.905.FI(b).

CPL FI privileges

In order to obtain the flight instructor privileges to provide commercial pilot trainings, you need to meet the criterias required by FCL.905.FI(e). It means to provide at least 200 hours of flight instruction in aeroplane. There is no need to attend assessment of competence. Once demonstrating 200 hours of flight instruction, state of license issue will issue Flight Instructor privileges for CPL(A) trainings.

VFR Night FI privileges

To grant the flight instructor privileges for VFR Night trainings, you need to meet the requirements of FCL.905.FI(e), that means:

  • be holder of VFR Night rating
  • have demonstrated the ability to instruct at night to an FI qualified in accordance with point (j);
  • comply with the night experience requirement laid down in point FCL.060(b)(2);

As a Flight instructor, you may provide VFR Night trainings also while your privileges are restricted in accordance with FCL.910.FI. There is no need to attend any kind of additional instructor training. However, you need to attend the assessment of competence provided by flight instructor authorized to provide the instructor trainings.

Aerobatic Instructor privileges

To grant the flight instructor privileges for Aerobatic trainings, you need to meet the requirements of FCL.905.FI(g), that means:

  • be holder of Aerobatic Rating
  • have demonstrated the ability to instruct towards aerobatic rating to an FI qualified in accordance with point (j);

As a Flight instructor, you may provide Aerobatic trainings also while your privileges are restricted in accordance with FCL.910.FI. There is no need to attend any kind of additional instructor training. However, you need to attend the assessment of competence provided by flight instructor authorized to provide the instructor trainings.

Aerotow Instructor privileges

To grant the flight instructor privileges for Aerotow trainings, you need to meet the requirements of FCL.905.FI(g), that means:

  • be holder of Aerotow Rating
  • have demonstrated the ability to instruct towards aerotow to an FI qualified in accordance with point (j);

As a Flight instructor, you may provide Aerotow trainings also while your privileges are restricted in accordance with FCL.910.FI. There is no need to attend any kind of additional instructor training. However, you need to attend the assessment of competence provided by flight instructor authorized to provide the instructor trainings.

Instrument rating FI privileges

As a flight instructor, you may provide instrument rating related flight trainings provided you meet the requirements of FCL.905.FI(h). That means the flight training towards:

  • modular instrument rating
  • competency-based instrument rating
  • enroute instrument rating
  • basic instrument rating

The requirements for Instrument rating flight instructor extension are:

  •  completed at least 200 hours of flight time under IFR, of which a maximum of 50 hours may be instrument ground time in an FFS, an FTD 2/3 or an FNPT II;
  • completed IRI training course (10 hours of technical training and 5 hours of flight training);
  • passed an assessment of competence for the instructor rating instructor certificate.

So in addition to IFR experience and IRI Training, to get the flight instructor privileges for instrument rating trainings, you need to attend the IRI assessment of competence with Flight Instructor ExaminerFIE(A).

To provide the instrument rating training on multi-engine aeroplane, you need to comply with points FCL.915.CRI(a), FCL.930.CRI and FCL.935.

Multi-engine FI privileges

As a flight instructor, you may provide flight training for multi-engine aeroplanes - e.g. on class MEP(land) provided you meet the requirements of FCL.905.FI(i). In order to extend FI privileges to multi-engine you need to comply with points FCL.915.CRI(a), FCL.930.CRI and FCL.935. That means to attend the CRI ME training. Minimum requirements for the training enrollment are required by FCL.915.CRI(a): 

  • 500 hours as pilot on aeroplanes
  • 30 hours as PIC on MEP(land) class

The FI extension training to multi-engine consists of 10 hours of technical training and 5 hours of flight training on multi-engine aeroplane.

FI privileges for instructor trainings

To provide an flight instructor, an instrument rating instructor, a class rating instrucror, an synthetic training instructor or an mountain instructor certificates you need to meet the requirements of FCL.905.FI(j) as follows:

  • completed at least 500 hours of flight instruction in the aeroplane;
  • passed an assessment of competence in accordance with point FCL.935 in aeroplane to demonstrate to a flight instructor examiner (FIE) the ability to instruct for the relevant certificate.

So in addition to instruction experience, to get the flight instructor privileges for instructor training, you need to attend the assessment of competence with Flight Instructor ExaminerFIE(A) for each particular certificate separately:

  • Individual Assessment of competence to provide FI trainings that also includes CRI SE and STI
  • Individual Assessment of competence to provide FI-ME trainings that also includes CRI ME
  • Individual Assessment of competence to provide FI-IRI trainings that also includes IRI
  • Individual Assessment of competence to provide MI trainings

MPL FI privileges 

In order to participate in multi-pilot license training, you as a flight instructor have to fullfill the requirement of FCL.905.FI(k), namely:

  • core flying phase of the MPL training course
    • 500 hours of flight time as a pilot of aeroplanes,
    • 200 hours of flight instruction;
  • for the basic phase of the MPL training course
    • hold a multi-engine instrument rating and the privilege to instruct for an instrument rating;
    • have completed at least 1 500 hours of flight time in multi-crew operations (multi-pilot operations);
    • In the case of flight instructor is already qualified to instruct on ATP(A) or CPL(A)/IR integrated courses, the requirement in previous point  may be replaced by the completion of a structured course of training consisting of:
      • MCC qualification;
      • observation of five sessions of flight instruction in Phase 3 of an MPL course;
      • observation of five sessions of flight instruction in Phase 4 of an MPL course;
      • observation of five operator recurrent line-oriented flight training sessions;
      • the content of the MCCI course.

In this case, flight instructor shall conduct their first five instructor sessions under the supervision of a TRI(A), an MCCI(A) or an SFI(A) qualified for MPL flight instruction.
