 ⚠️ What is STI assessment of competence ✈️

STI(A) or STI assessment of competence is supervised simulator session a EASA FIE(A) examiner - so-called Flight Instructor Examiner - FIE. The aim of the supervised training session is to assess the competence of the Exam candidate to provide the training in simulator. Eventough the Part FCL does not specifically require the STI assessment of competence, the supervised simulator session shall include the assessment of the applicant’s competence as described in FCL.920.

STI certificate is usually the choice for flight instructors who lost medical wishing to instruct towards private pilotcommercial pilot or instrument rating in simulator only.

Privileges ✅ of the Synthethic Training Instructor

The Syntethic Training Instructor certificate is valid for 36 months iaw FCL.940. The privileges of a Syntethic Training Instructor iaw FCL.905.STI are to provide the flight training in simulator for:

  • the issue of a licence (e.g. private pilot license or commercial pilot license);
  • the issue, revalidation or renewal of an instrument rating and a class or type rating for single-pilot aircraft, except for single-pilot high performance complex aeroplanes.
  • core flying skills training of the MPL integrated training course.

Pre-requisites of Synthetic Training Instructor AoC ✅

 Before attending the STI assessment of competence, the Exam candidate has to meet pre-requisites in FCL.930.STI for obtaining the STI(A):

  • hold, or have held within the prior 3 years a pilot licence and instructional privileges;
  • have completed in an FSTD the relevant proficiency check for the class or type rating, in the period of 12 months immediately preceding the application.

STI Training course ✅

In accordance with FCL.930.STI, the STI training course comprises at least 3 hours simulator. The training course has to be done under the supervision of an FIE and serves also as an STI assessment of competence.

Content of STI ✈️ assessment

Section 1 - the oral theoretical knowledge examination part of the assessment of competence, is subdivided into two parts:

  • The Exam candidate is required to give a lecture under test conditions to other ‘student(s)’, one of whom will be the EASA FIE(A) examiner. The test lecture is to be selected from items of section 1 of assessment of competence iaw FCL.920. The amount of time for preparation of the test lecture is agreed upon beforehand with the FIE(A) examiner. Appropriate literature may be used by the applicant. The test lecture should not exceed 45 minutes;
  • The applicant is tested orally by an EASA examiner for knowledge of items of Section 1 and the ‘core instructor competencies: teaching and learning’ content given in the instructor courses.

Sections 2, 3 and 5 - sections comprise exercises to demonstrate the ability to be an STI chosen by the examiner from the flight syllabus of the STI training course. The Exam candidate is required to demonstrate STI abilities, including briefing, flight instruction and de-briefing.

Pass criteria ✅ of the EASA STI(A) assessment

The Exam candidate for synthetic training instructor shall be assessed in order to verify the competences required by FCL.920. The STI assessment of competence should be made against performance standards described in AMC1 FCL.920 in following areas:
